Toys play an important part of your child’s development. As your child grows, playtime assists in the acquisition and development of a variety of skills. Your child learns many basic skills through play, so any toy she enjoys playing with is beneficial to her.

However, toys may pose a hazard to young children if they are not safe and not used safely. You may need to consider the safety aspects of the toys, your child is going to play with and close supervision is a must.
Unfortunately, toys available in the Indian market contain lead and other toxic materials that are harmful to your child. The toy manufacturers in India do not have any specific guidelines for safety and quality check. It becomes all the more necessary to protect your child from these harmful toxins that affect your child unknowingly. Here are a few steps that you need to remember to keep playtime safe for your child.

Hazards of toys
  • Toddlers usually tend to put things in their mouth. Small balls, small toys or any other small objects can choke your child.
  • Squeeze toys with removable squeakers can be dangerous.
  • Motion toys with removable wheels or other small parts can be a cause of choking.
  • Toys with long cords, sharp edges and loud music are dangerous to your child.
Toy shopping
  • Select toys that suit your child’s age, interest and abilities.
  • Until your child turns 3, toys or toy parts should be bigger than his/her mouth.
  • Check if the toy is too heavy for your child.
  • Look for a quality construction.
  • Avoid toys with sharp edges or sharp points and that produce loud noise.
  • Carefully read the label for safety information for non-toxic, washable material, etc. or if you intend to buy electrically operated toys, shooting toys and games, chemistry sets.
  • Avoid toys that list vinyl or PVC as an ingredient and if possible, choose plastic-free toys.
  • Avoid toys with small pieces.
After you buy a toy
  • Discard any packaging, plastic wrapping or tags before giving a toy to your child.
  • Teach your child how to use the toy and always supervise your child when playing.
  • Keep away soft and plastic toys away from fire sources.
  • Always watch for choking hazards. Loose or broken part that may be small enough to fit in your baby’s mouth has the potential for danger.
  • Throw away or repair any broken toy right away.
  • Remove any toys from the crib or bed when your baby goes to sleep.
  • Keep all the toys clean. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions first before cleaning it.
  • Never give your baby a balloon as uninflated or broken balloons present serious choking hazards.
  • Make sure that the toy box has a special safety lid (or no lid at all) to prevent it from slamming on your child’s head or trapping her inside.
  • Keep toys which are designed for older children out of your child’s hand as it is not safe for her.
