The seventeenth week of pregnancy

Your changing body
By around this time, your expanding belly will be slowly pushing other organs of the body to accommodate your growing baby and the Uterus. You may also experience an increase in vaginal discharge. You’d be adding few more pounds as your baby experiences growth spurts.

Average weight gain is around two to four kg. An expanding belly can add discomfort to normal body movements contributing to problems of balance. Be careful about your choice of footwear---high heeled shoes may make you more prone to falls, so swap them with the stylish flat ballerinas.

Your growing baby
If you have still not experienced the movements of your baby, you may do so by around this time as his movements become more intense.
Your baby is even capable of flipping and doing somersaults in your Uterus. At week 17, he/she weighs around 140 g, is about 13 cm in length and as big as a veggie (knol-khol).The little hands and legs are slowly reaching their relative proportions, becoming stronger and will continue to grow evenly with the rest of the body after this week.

Tips for the seventeenth week of pregnancy
Seek medical advice for vaginal discharge if it is also accompanied with an itching or burning sensation. This might be due to a yeast or bacterial infection.

Activities for the seventeenth week of pregnancy
Ensure that you remain infection free by inculcating good hygiene practices. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. After using the toilet, cleanse yourself from front to rear (vaginal area first and then rectal area) to avoid inoculating your Vagina with bacteria from the rectum, a common source of vaginal or urinary tract infection.

Supplements to be taken during the seventeenth week of pregnancy
Folic acid, iron and calcium supplements.

Common problems in the seventeenth week of pregnancy
You may have periodic pain in your legs. This pain is called Sciatic nerve pain. Sciatic nerve runs near your Uterus to your legs and provides sensory and motor functions to the lower part of your body.

Your growing baby and Uterus can put pressure on the nerve, causing pain. Common tests in the seventeenth week of pregnancy: Besides the Ultrasound scan as scheduled by your obstetrician, optional tests which may include the quadruple marker screening test, alpha-fetoprotein test and amniocentesis (optional) may be performed.
