After my last period, I had taken tablets Thioact and Hifemat thrice as they were prescribed by my doctor for severe pain in the neck. Since then, I have had my pregnancy confirmed and need to know whether these medicines could have harmed my baby. Can you please let me know?
Regarding the use of Thioact in pregnancy, there are no adequate studies. Ideally, both these drugs should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. While Thioact should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy, Hifemat or diclofenac during the last 3 months of pregnancy may result in birth defects. Do not panic, since you took only 3 doses, there might not be any problem with your baby. You see your gynecologist and seek her/his advice. She/he might suggest certain tests, including an ultrasound of your abdomen, which may help in finding out if there is any problem with the fetus.
Does the rate of baby’s heartbeat predict the sex of my baby? I am 24 weeks pregnant, my baby’s heartbeat is 160. Is the baby a girl?
Prediction of the gender of baby based on the rate of heartbeat is just one of the pregnancy myths. This myth is routed in the belief that women usually have higher metabolic rates than men and hence, have a slightly higher heartbeat rate. Studies have shown that there is no correlation between gender and fetal heart rate.

My mother who is in early 60s is obese but non-diabetic and non-hypertensive. She leads a sedentary lifestyle which is limited household activities. Her nutritional intake has been reduced significantly due to the difficulty in chewing with her newly-fitted dentures that is reflected in dry skin, lack of energy, etc. Will Women’s Horlicks be beneficial for her? Kindly suggest whether she needs any nutritional supplement or not.
