I am a middle aged mother of two kids with a lovely husband. I don’t have any problem in my life except that I get extremely emotional very often. I tend to cry when I watch TV, read newspaper, heard someone’s story, etc. Because of this, I feel very embarrassed and hence, I avoid going to meetings and gatherings. I want to come out of this. Please suggest me a remedy.
A few more details related to your problem are needed. You need to tell us for how long you have had this problem, whether you have any health problems or on any medications. If you get very emotional a few days before or during your periods, it can be due to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) as a result of hormonal changes in your body, which is pretty normal.
There is a strong possibility that your extreme emotionality over normal things like reading newspapers, watching TV or listening to others’ stories, could be related to something with what you have experienced in the past. You may be personalizing the event or scene you are witnessing. However, you may fail to realize it as it may be happening subconsciously in your mind. Try to analyze what triggers you to become emotional usually and avoid the triggers if you can. Although there are certain things beyond our control, but it is worth making an attempt to keep your mind and your emotions in control. Try to have a positive attitude and concentrate on the things you like doing. Tell yourself that you are not going to cry and picture yourself not crying over those things. Meditation and some regular physical exercise may also help.
Also, remember that it is not uncommon for others to get emotional while watching TV or reading something. Many people do. However, if you are finding increasingly difficult to handle the situation, I would recommend you to meet a clinical psychologist for undergoing counseling and get help. Many people have fought their way through it and I am sure, with little help you will soon be fine.
I got married to a US citizen and went to US on K-3 visa. My husband and his parents used to abuse me physically and verbally. They would criticize my parents, not let me talk to my parents or friends, beat me up and threaten me almost everyday. They also made me to do work that requires lots of physical strength, as a result I started having severe back pain, chest pain and thyroid problems. When I told my husband about having a child, they forced me to sign amicable divorce paper and sent me back to India. I have filed a case in the court and its still pending.
From your mail it seems that your husband and his parents had abused you physically and emotionally, which is reflecting in your present state of health and mind.
Since you are already in consultation with your lawyer and the matter is sub judice we cannot offer any advice on the matter. With regards to your state of mind and health, we would strongly recommend you to consult a clinical psychologist who will determine the requirement for counseling and treatment at the earliest.
Remember, its not your fault and nobody has the right to harm you physically and mentally because you, like anybody else, deserve to be treated with respect.
The process of healing may take time but with little help and support, the ordeal will soon be a distant memory. Try to have a positive attitude and concentrate on the things you like doing. Don’t isolate yourself from your friends and family. We are sure you will fight your way through it and find yourself enjoying the life you deserve.
