Dr. Professor Suneeta Mittal is currently heading the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and is Director-in-Charge, WHO-CCR in Human Reproduction at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Her pioneer contribution in research and introducing emergency contraception and medical abortion in India has established her as a WHO expert on Emergency Contraception and Medical Abortion. She is the Regional Editor for WHO Reproductive Health Library. Her expertise in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology made her serve as Consultant to Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India; World Bank; United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); WHO; Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) & National Institute of Health And Family Welfare (NIHFW) for the RCH Programmes. She is representing the Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecological Societies of India as Vice-President and President of Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologist of Delhi. She is also Vice-President for Indian Society of Perinatology & Reproductive Biology and Vice-president, Indian Society for the Study of Reproduction & Fertility.
Dr. Mittal has carried out significant research with WHO and contributed to several WHO monograms including Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive use. She has over 240 publications in International and National journals, books and book chapters and has received several awards, orations and fellowships including prestigious `Fellowship of National Academy of Medical Sciences' and 'Fellowship ad eundum of Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
She is concerned with women's health and is Chief Co-ordinator for Consortium for Emergency Contraception and Medical Abortion in India. She played a pivotal role in introducing emergency contraception in India. Her participatory all-inclusive approach to get a national consensus enabled Indian Government to introduce Emergency Contraception in the basket of choices for women in India.
For making pregnancy safer in the country she has recently initiated a national wide 12 by 12 initiative in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, Government of India and Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology Societies of India (FOGSI) targeted at eradication of anemia during adolescence by ensuring 12 gram% hemoglobin for every child by 12 years of age. Her concept of correcting anemia at this age will go a long way in improving the health of future parents in the country and bringing down the alarming maternal mortality rate.
She has recently initiated the In-Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer facility at all India Institute of Medical Sciences to help the under-privileged section of the society, who were being deprived of the joy of motherhood since they could not afford the treatment which was available only in private sector so far.
While her colleagues and peers admire her administrative and organizational skills, Dr Mittal's patients find her a sensitive and caring doctor, who despite onerous responsibility as head of the department lends herself passionately to the cause of women and reproductive health.
