Dr. Kamini A. Rao - President of the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction and Medical Director of Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre is one of India's foremost Obstetricians and an Infertility Specialist with an ongoing Infertility Programme and a success rate comparable to that anywhere in the world. She is credited with the birth of India's first test tube baby using semen intra-fallopian transfer (SIFT) as well as South India's first Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) baby and Laser Assisted Hatching baby. A champion for the cause of Women she has done extensive work in the area of Women's Sexual & Reproductive Rights with the aim of bringing about changes in Medical practice / standards to make them gender sensitive and ethical.
Dr. Rao has held the position of India's Representative to the International Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecology (FIGO) and is currently the Chairperson of the FIGO Women's Sexual and Reproductive Rights Committee. She has had the distinction of serving not only as India's Representative to FIGO but also to the Asia Oceania Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecology (AOFOG) and that too simultaneously. Keeping in mind her long standing work in the field of Infertility she has been invited by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to serve as a Member of the National Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology to review and monitor the implementation of the national ART guidelines and advise the Central Government on all policy matters regarding the same.
Her Clinic Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre has advanced in leaps and bounds and has currently entered the field of stem cell research through a tie up with the National Centre for Biological Sciences.
Dr. Kamini Rao has authored over seventeen books and will be bringing out four more this year the prominent among them being the "Under Graduate textbook of Obs. & Gyn." She has done the medical fraternity proud not only with her achievements in her own specialty and academically but also as a champion for the cause of women be it Safe Abortion, Female Feticide or Women's sexual & reproductive rights. Apart from a fruitful 15 year stint in private practice, Dr. Kamini Rao has chosen to bring her expertise in Women's Health to the public sector. A strong commitment to improving Reproductive and Child Health has been the driving force for her untiring efforts in this direction. A champion for the cause of Women she has worked zealously to highlight issues such as women's empowerment, female feticide, safe abortion, contraceptive choices & Reproductive Child Health.
