The fact that skin is the largest organ in the body, including it is also being a sense organ, makes it important that there is adequate care and conditioning provided to keep skin healthy and functional. One of the main factors involved in caring for skin is cleansing of the skin. This cleansing needs to be holistic so that skin is cleaned from within and from the outside.

When to clean
Cleansing depends on the skin type, which predominantly determines how, how much and how often skin will need to be cleaned. Usually, it is considered convenient and ideal to cleanse skin first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Though the time convenience is a major factor, there are other practical and scientific reasons governing this timing for cleansing.
How often to clean
Normally, skin may need to be cleansed 2–3 times in the course of the day. Oilyskin types and individuals exposed to frequent and excessive pollutants may needto clean their skin as often as 4–5 times a day to wash away the grime and dirt.

Drier skin types may be harmed by too frequent washing and cleaning and will needspecial care to avoid hot water, harsh cleansers and soaps and rough handling ordrying. Oil-based cleansers may be a welcome part of the cleansing routine, insteadof soap which may have a drying effect.
How to clean
It is equally important that you pay attention to how you clean your face.Cleansing away the accumulated grime and dirt along with the underlying make-up needs to be a thorough job and will need the aid of special agents. If the bedtime cleansing routine is a thorough endeavor, the morning cleansing need not be very elaborate.

What to use for cleansing
There are myriad products that are available for cleansing of the face and body skin. These range from a host of soaps to body cleansers and scrubs.

Soaps
Soaps are ubiquitous as cleansers and are an indispensable aspect of most cleansing routines. Some tips to be incorporated during cleansing with soap include:
  • Soap can cause skin irritation if it persists on the skin following cleansing.
  • Soap residue left on the skin can combine with calcium and magnesium salts in water to form a scum which is very difficult to eliminate from the skin.
  • Soaps tend to dry the skin of essential oils. Cleansing of skin with soap should be followed by adequate moisturizing routines.
  • Scrubs should be used once or twice a week for normal skin and on alternate days for oily skin types.
  • Synthetic scrubs may be better for use on facial skin, especially if the granules are fine and smooth.
  • Facial cloths can be an alternative to regular use of scrubs as they scrub the skin gently.
  • Cleansing pouches can be used with cleansers for a balanced skin-care routine.
Cleansing different skin types
  • Normal skin will require cleaning about twice a day with mild soap and warm water. A mild toner can follow cleansing and tighten open pores.
  • Dry skin needs light cream cleansers and probably with an exfoliant in individuals with flaky, dry skin. This can be followed up with a hydrating toner to ensure a smooth texture.
  • Oily skin required a lathering cream or bar cleanser because they penetrate the layers of grime and oil for better cleansing. Products with alpha-hydroxy acid will act as an exfoliant on oily skin and remove dead Cells.
  • Combination skin requires cleansers with a balanced formula for moisture balancing.
